Soft Opening First Day Visit to Six Po Hot Pot - The Chengdu Style is in Sydney

The franchise brand from Chengdu China 6 Po Hot Pot 六婆串串香 has just launched its very first restaurant in Sydney, Australia YAY! It is the Chengdu Style stick food hot pot. We came for lunch on the first day of soft opening and we were the first table!

Food hunting video:

The restaurant is on George Street, it is not large but super popular among Chinese. Suggestion is, either you go there early or you get ready to line up...

Nice interior, has a strong Sichuan vide.

How you eat Chengdu hot pot:

First you sit down, choose you soup base: red chilli OR red chilli & white soup half half (soup base: $19.8). As you can see we got half half, always taste them both. It's also because vegetables will suck up a lot of red chilli oil and become super chilli hot so we always cook our meat and offal in the red then vegetables in the white. But for a lot of Chinese, red soup alone is good enough.

Choose your own ingredients on sticks or plates from the shelf. (small stick 70c per, big stick 90c per)

Red chilli oil hot pot is always perfect for offal. So if you are willing to try, get some beef tripe and duck gut. For us, we love eating it...woohoo

Then choose from 2 types of sauce: sesame oil sauce and dry chilli powder dipping. Traditionally, you get them both. All the sauce and soup base here at this restaurant are packaged and delivered directly from China, so the flavours are all consistent.

DIY your own combo for the oil sauce. The traditional way in Chengdu is to add some vinegar and oyster sauce then pour the oil in your bowl, trust me it tastes amazing.
(First day soft opening was a bit rush so the restaurant forgot to put vinegar and oyster sauce out, so we asked for it. Just in case you don't see the ingredient or sauces you want, don't be shy just ask for it, the kitchen always has it.)

Your dry chilli powder goes on to the plate. When you eat, always dip the cooked food in the oil bowl first, then dip the powder on the plate, then eat it. We get so addicted to the chilli powder, it is just sensational! Ask for extra pack, you will love it.

Get your sauce ready soup boiled, and go ahead ENJOY!

Ausome Tips:

1. Remember to ask for dry chilli powder, put it on the plate and dip your food on it, it is insanely good! We are so addicted.
2. Vinegar and oyster sauce is always the best combo for oil sauce, make it flavourful.
3. If you cannot find the ingredient you like on the shelf, ask the staff to check kitchen, you might have surprise. We got a plate of secret noodles from the kitchen and it's soooo good!

    1. Hi there, ooops my bad...got too excited sharing the review, forgot to put in the pricing. It's Chinese Chengdu Style hotpot, basically you choose your stick food and cook them in the soup base, then dip in the special sauce and eat it. The reason it's so popular is because it's the very first branch in Australia, and 6Po is actually a well-known franchise brand from China Sichuan province. So for the local Chinese here it's the flavour of home.

For the price, the soup base is $19.8 (choose from all red or red/white half half), big stick 90c per, small stick 70c. There's still huge line every day, even the owner is surprised to see how popular they are. So~yah happy food hunting:) Cheers!

  2. Too expensive $140 for 2 people plus 1 hour waiting in the line to get in the restaurant. The hot pot is very similar to San Cheng hot pot in China town but much more expensive. Not recommend.

    1. yah i heard a lot of the disappointment afterwards from friends as well. Unfortunately, to be honest I didn't really experience that coz I arrived there on the first day they opened for lunch (work day heavy rain too), we were the only table in the restaurant and a lot of food wasn't available so total price was like 70-80 for 2 ppl. Guess they must have changed sth after it got super popular. Really sorry to hear that tho. Anyways I keep telling my friends now don't go line up coz a lot of their franchises are opening soon.

  3. Thanks for your review! This one does look a bit pricey, though. The same amount of food generally cost 20c (Chinese Yuan) per stick in Chengdu, which is about 4c in AUD. I understand the time and effort they need to present the food in this way, however, 串串香 or stick hot pot is meant to be the cheapest form of hot pot in Chengdu. They might have to review their pricing otherwise I don't find it attractive at all, especially for someone who come from Chengdu (such as myself).

    1. Hey there thanks for dropping by. You're from Chengdu, so lucky. It's a foodie heaven. Actually we just did a crazy food hunting in Chengdu (also visiting the pandas) at the beginning of this year. LOVED the city and food.
