Shanghai's Most Popular Yang's Fried Dumpling Now in Sydney
As a foodie grown up in Shanghai, I was so excited learning that Yang's Dumpling is finally now in Sydney. We've been thinking about this signature flavor ever since we arrived Sydney earlier this year. Yang's fried dumpling (Chinese pinyin: sheng jian bao, 生煎包) probably has the most soup and juiciest pork stuffing in the Shanghai dumpling "world". We paid a visit to the newly opened Yang's in Burwood during its soft opening, and here comes our food hunt video.
Sydney does have quite a few Shanghainese restaurants that serve fried dumplings, but none of them is Xiao Yang. So we couldn't wait and paid a visit as soon as we heard that it's now in Burwood, another "Chinatown".
We arrived at 1pm only to find that the shop wouldn't be open till 2pm for the soft opening period. Luckily it wasn't hard at all for us to find some snacks nearby.
It's a small takeaway shop with the Master Chef and Local Partner testing the market. Production of the Sheng Jian Bao is limited so be sure to get in there early and don't be surprised if the person in front of you buys 10 orders...then you have to give your mobile number and come back 1-1.5hours later.
The other items on the menu are usually available after 4pm, so dinner time there is always a line outside. I am surprised to see that they actually sell Xiaolongbao here as well, back in China this place sells fried dumpling and Shanghai soup wonton only.
Rating: 3.5/5
It is definitely the original recipe from Shanghai: fried crispy dumplings with hot soup inside when you bite. Yum!
However the bottom is not consistent enough, some dumplings' bottoms are broken already before they're served, so the excitment of drinking the soup inside is missing. The small size of the kitchen is an issue, and stove is not designed for the traditional round black metal wok from China, the crew have to use normal frying pans instead so the wok hey is unfortunately not there. Anyway, overall, good flavor! It is already amazing that we are able to have Yang's in Sydney.
Don't forget to grab the vinegar & chilli oil at the counter.

The Visit: Yang's Fried Dumpling 小杨生煎
Yang's Dumpling actually started as a small takeaway shop on the old but classic Wujiang Lu food street in Shanghai almost 20 years ago. It is definitely not the traditional version of the Shanghai Fried Dumpling, but its own secret recipe (thinner skin, crunchier bottom, juicier meat with soup stuffing) quickly gained fans from all over the country. With large branches all over Shanghai now, Yang's is recognized as a must-eat and visit place in town.Sydney does have quite a few Shanghainese restaurants that serve fried dumplings, but none of them is Xiao Yang. So we couldn't wait and paid a visit as soon as we heard that it's now in Burwood, another "Chinatown".
